Jakarta. Indonesia AirAsia, the local affiliate of Southeast Asia's largest budget airline, has appointed model and actress Raline Shah as an independent commissioner, as part of its preparations for an initial public offering later this year, the company said on Tuesday (08/08).
Raline, 32, who holds a bachelor's degree in political science, new media and communications from the National University of Singapore, was appointed during a general shareholder meeting on Monday. This is the first time for Raline, who has starred in eight films and countless advertising campaigns, to serve on the board of an airline.
AirAsia Group chief executive Tony Fernandes said Raline's youth and talent will provide "a fresh perspective" on the country's market, especially as the company plans its IPO.
Fernandes said AirAsia is also always close to the youth and the millennial generation.
"With Raline, we achieve that. AirAsia has always thought outside of the box and while some would raise their eyebrows, it’s moves like this which keep us relevant and ahead of our competitors," he said in a statement.
Fernandes announced Raline's appointment on his Instagram account on Monday, but mistakenly referred to her as a "new director" of AirAsia Indonesia.
Indonesia AirAsia chief commissioner Pin Harris said the appointment reflects the airline's dynamism and its belief in youth empowerment.
"This can bring AirAsia Indonesia to the next level," Pin said.
AirAsia Indonesia president director Dendy Kurniawan said the airline's management was looking forward to working with Raline.
Raline meanwhile said she was eager to join AirAsia and her different background would allow her to maintain neutral in carrying out her task.
She first entered the limelight in 2008 after becoming a people's favorite in the Puteri Indonesia beauty pageant. She made here acting debut in the drama "5 cm" in 2012, which was a critical and commercial success.
Raline was also nominated as best supporting actress at the 2015 Indonesian Film Festival for her role in the film "Surga Yang Tak Dirindukan" ("An Undesired Bliss").
