Jakarta. Indonesian e-commerce marketplace Elevenia.co.id joins hands with seven local zakat institutions to provide online zakat payment, for Muslims to easily pay their alms.
The service is intended to streamline alms giving. Instead of having to go to representatives of zakat institutions, Elevenia customers can now make their payments online.
"We want to provide an easy, transparent and reliable online zakat payment system for the community, especially our customers. With this service, we want them to understand the importance of zakat," Elevenia senior brand manager Rezki Yanuar said at a press conference in South Jakarta on Monday (19/06).
It is compulsory for Muslims to pay zakat during Ramadan. The amount is calculated based on their income and the value of all their assets. The funds are distributed to the needy.
Islamic charity organization Rumah Zakat, which has joined Elvenia's online zakat program in 2015, has collected 75 percent of Rp 230 billion ($1.84 million) collected last year.
"Surprisingly, a lot of our customers prefer to pay zakat online rather than by visiting our office. This program also helps us to minimize the number unidentified zakat payers," Rumah Zakat chief marketing officer Irvan Nugraha said.
Irvan said the digital service will benefit the public, especially millenials.
"I hope the cooperation between Rumah Zakat and Elevenia.co.id will establish a new tradition of paying zakat seamlessly. Younger generations are always fascinated by technology, I am certain that it will be well received by them."
Other organizations in Elvenia's program are Dompet Dhuafa, Baznas, PPPA Darul Qur'an, Aksi Cepat Tanggap (ACT), SOS Children's Villages Indonesia and Baitul Maal Hidyatullah (BMH).
This year, people wishing to make online zakat payments with Elevenia.co.id can choose the type of zakat: Syi'ar Qur'an, Lebaran Gifts, Lebaran Gifts for Orphans and Iftar Package for Orphans. The amounts range from Rp 25,000 to Rp 360,000.
Overseas customers can also pay their zakat online.
"From our customers who live overseas we receive zakat in dollars," said Rezki.
Registered customers can give donations and pay zakat online by logging in to the website and clicking Donation Service.
