Jakarta. Ahead of Kartini Day on April 21, Senayan City mall in South Jakarta renewed its collaboration with esteemed designer Iwan Tirta to celebrate inspirational Indonesian women at its annual fashion show on Wednesday (12/04).
In its 11th year, Fashion Nation awarded 10 mother and daughter pairs from across the archipelago for their awe-inspiring achievements and social work.
"We have given these awards to women who have dedicated their lives to their families, careers and themselves," Senayan City mall chief executive, Veri Y. Setiady said.
"This year, we have nominated mothers and daughters who inspire other women and girls to achieve and believe in their dreams."
The "Iconic Women" awardees include senior actress Marini Sardi and her daughter Shelomita; renowned singer Ruth Sahanaya and her daughter Nadine Waworuntu; designer Sjamsidar Isa and her daughter Aida Nurmala; and Dewi Motik and her daughter Moza Pramita.
Nadine, an emerging actress in her own right, said she feels blessed to have been nominated for the award.
"I feel honored to receive this award. It proves that I can have a significant impact on other women."
She is also hopeful that being placed among other awardees can help her stay motivated.
"I hope I inspire not only girls and women, but everyone, to work hard to achieve their dreams."
In addition to the awards ceremony, celebrated designer Iwan Tirta showcased his latest batik creations at Wednesday's event.
The collection, known as "Sigaraning Nyawa" – or "Soulmate" – comprised of six kebayas (long-sleeved blouse) and 21 evening dresses produced exclusively from batik.
In preparing his collection, Iwan collaborated with renowned designer Era Soekamto – who also won an Iconic Women award – to combine the classic cutting form of kebaya, known as kutu baru, with batik motifs, such as flowers, animals and geometric patterns.
Iwan and Era experimented with bold and earth tone colors, as well as floral patterns, for the kebaya tops on display at Wednesday's event. Paired with traditional batik pieces, models were presented in classic Indonesian garb.
"The kebaya represents the true identity of Indonesian women, which in turn inspired me to create elegant designs stemming from an old-fashioned style, but steeped in a modern approach," Iwan said in a prerecorded clip before the event.
Iconic Women awardees showcased Iwan’s collection of elegant evening dresses in earth tone color patterns with sharp and dazzling heels.
One of the most eye-catching pieces displayed at Wednesday's event included a white batik dress combined with a cape and shoulder pads, exuding a chic yet swanky look.
Fashion Nation will run until Saturday, April 15.
