Jakarta. Eddy Susilo, assistant deputy for business and government at the Ministry of Tourism, officially opened the second North Sumatra International Choir Competition in Medan on Wednesday (02/08).

"We have been consistently supporting events that will attract foreign tourists, but the regional governments and committees should be prepared. The Tourism Ministry will continue to boost foreign tourist arrivals in all regions," Eddy said during his speech at North Sumatra University.

North Sumatra International Choir Competition committee chairman Jones Selon Lubis thanked the ministry for the support. The event, themed "Singing Brings Unity" is held at the North Sumatra University, RRI Medan Hall and Gereja Batak Karo Protestan.

"The activities will include a choir competition, workshops and seminars, exhibition, public entertainment, joint concerts and tours. The competition categories include mixed youth choir, mixed choir, mixed chamber choir, equal voice, musica sacra, gospel and spiritual, folklore, popular music and religious music," Jones said.

There will be an additional Toba Grand Prix category, which will only be open to invited participants and winners from previous international competitions.

Participants include domestic and international choirs, including from the Philippines.

Tourism Minister Arief Yahya earlier encouraged the development of the tourism sector at Lake Toba by setting a target of one million foreign tourist visits by 2019.

"Events such as the North Sumatra International Choir Competition at Lake Toba can boost the number of [foreign tourists] significantly," the minister said.
