Jakarta. The "Wonderful Indonesia" campaign was featured at the 2017 Silk Road International Tourism Expo in Xi'an, China, on Aug. 4-6.
According to the deputy for foreign marketing development at the Ministry of Tourism, I Gde Pitana, China is the main market for Indonesia's tourism sector.
Between January and April, of 4.2 million foreign tourists visiting Indonesia, 1.1 million were from China.
They visited Manado in North Sulawesi and Bali especially, many of them brought by Lion Air, which operates flights from six Chinese cities.
"The expo is likely to attract more Chinese visitors to Indonesia. This is the largest annual exhibition of this kind in China," Pitana said.
The Silk Road International Tourism Expo this year had 500 exhibitors from 30 countries, offering culinary and entertainment attractions, accommodation, transportation and travel packages to more than 45,000 visitors.
Wonderful Indonesia's 108 square meter booth was set up to facilitate Indonesian sellers in meeting foreign buyers. It also promoted cultural attractions and had a special coffee corner for guests.
According to Tourism Minister Arief Yahya, the increase in arrivals from China has been triggered by the ministry's recent promotional activities.
"It is part of our strategy to have 15 million foreign tourist visit Indonesia in 2017," he said.
